 Revolutionary War veteran from Virginia - in Virginia Militia 1778
drafted into militia company commanded by his brother, Capt John Stewart
 1781 -  Present at surrender of Yorktown - Sergeant
 1812 - May have served as officer in Army durring the War of 1812

The DAR Patriot Index has him as a Sergeant of Virginia Militia with copy of pension papers: National Archives Central Research Room Branch, Washington, DC. 20408. First wife was Mary Penn, second was Martha B. Wilson. He enlisted in the militia at age sixteen under the command of Col. Daniel Gaines, who appointed him Commissioner of Provisions with rank of Sgt. He was at the Battle of Yorktown. He moved to Wilkes County after 1793. After many years, he moved to Monroe Co and later to Macon/Schley Co, about two miles east of Ellaville. He is buried in the family cemetery on this farm. William Stewart was one of 13 children, 9 sons & 4 daughters. His grandfather may have been William Stewart. (1705 Land Grant). (This information from Ernie Stewart.)

William Stewart, a citizen of the County of Oglethorpe, in this state of Georgia wishes to travel through the Creek Nation of Indians. Being satisfied of his fair standing and character, he has my permission to do so, taking especial care to conduct himself agreeably to the laws of the U.S. regulating trade and intercourse with the Indian Tribes. He was a justice of the peace. He owned 240 acres on Fishing Creek, in Green
and Oglethorpe Counties.Previous owners of his land;Charles Smith/David
Meriwether.His home burned in 1812.Soon after he moved to Monroe Co.Ga. Later
he went to Macon County to stay with son James.He was in Revolutionary War,
buried at James's Plantation in Schley County Georgia in an unmarked grave. He
had a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because when he would hear a drum or a
gun shot,he would cry! Grave is 5 M.E.of Ellaville,Georgia on Oglethorpe Rd.26.
William,was listed in the 1800 census in Oglethorpe County Georgia,in Capt.
Stewarts Company.William shows two sons under 10,one son 10 to 16,one son 16
to 26,and two daughters under 10.He lives beside his mother ann,and his other
neighbors are John Shropshire,and John Winn.He owns two slaves. He was also a
Captain in the Georgia Militia in 1812. William's War Claim Number is W11555.
Since he was so sure he was born in Hanover County Virginia,I thought I'd add
all the Stewarts in the county.The records were burned.However,the rent roll
0f 1763 are in Public Records Office,London England.A.O. 13/30.Folder G 11.
Endorsed."A True and Perfect Rent Roll of all the Lands in the County of
Hanover paying Quitrents to His Majesty for the year of One Thousand Seven
Hundred and Sixty [three] so far as I [am] able to discover."Sheriff of the
said county.From the Loyalist Claim of Samuel Gist.The list has only one
Stewart.However,I thought I'd increase the list looking for people who may
have migrated south with the Stewarts.George Stewart Hanover County Virginia
owns 200 acres,James Adams owns 100 acres,Peter Adams owns 115 acres,Anselem
Bailey owns 226 acres,John Blair owns 1,750 acres,John Brown owns 165 acres,
John Carter owns 134 acres,Andrew Christian owns 150 acres,David Crawford owns
360 acres,James Crews owns 100 acres,Charles Davis owns 100 acres,John Day
owns 353 acres,Jeremiah Dumas owns 671 acres,William Haws owns 252 acres,

of Floyd,Stovall,and Hatcher.It looks like they married their desendants in
Georgia and Alabama.We now know that before John and ann moved to Amherst
County they lived at a place called "Muddy Creek"in Cumberland County
Virginia. Deeds 1846/1856 Monroe County Georgia,Page 297,registered
Feb.16,1849. This indenture made and entered into this twenty-third day of
March one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven between William B. Stewart
of the state and county above written of the one part and John B. Hutchinson
of the same said state and county of the other part witnessed that the said
William B. Stewart for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and ten
dollars to him in hand paid the receipt is hereby acknowledged hath granted
bargained and sold and do by these presents grant bargan sell and convey unto
the said John B. Hutchinson his heirs and assigns all that the tract or parcel
of land lying and being in the state and county written above containing of
fifty acres be the same more or less known as one fourth of lot number two
hundred and five in the fourth district of said county and the north west
corner.Interlined so as to distinguish the corner of said lot.To have and to
hold the said tract or parcel of land unto the said John B. Hutchinson his
heirs and assign together with all and singular the wrights members and
appertinances therof to the same in any manner belonging to his and their own
proper use benefit and behoof for even in fee sample and the said William
B.Stewart for himself his heirs executors and adminstration the said bargined
premisses unto the said John B.Hutchinson his heirs and assigns will warrent
and forever defend the right and title thereof against themselves and against
the claims of all other persons whatever.In witness where of the said Stewart

connected with the Blantons in some way back in Virginia,Miss Matilda Stewart
was married by reverend Benjamin Blanton to Capt. Jacob Phinizy. She is the
daughter of General John Stewart of Oglethorpe County Georgia. Dated May
25,1813. Since they also came to Georgia.
